What are title tags and meta descriptions.

Anyone involved in SEO, even at an amateur level, will have heard of Meta Tags. Let's see how Tag Title and Meta Description are written from an SEO perspective to improve the positioning on search engines of our site and increase the chances that users decide to click on our results in SERP.

What are Meta Tags

The Meta Tags are HTML attributes that provide additional information on our Web pages crawlers of search engines and consequently affect fiber SEO.

From a technical point of view, the insertion of meta tags must be carried out within the tags in the HTML code of our web page.

For more information on all the Meta tags recognized by Google, I refer you to the official guide.

SEO Meta Tags: which ones are useful for ranking

Although over time search engines, and especially Google, have reduced the importance of meta tags as a positioning factor, even today there are some meta tags that play a fundamental role:

1. Tag Title

2. Meta Description

Both play the role of succinctly communicating to search engines and users what the page is about.

Google notifies us of any problems in compiling the Tag Title and Meta Description through the HTML Enhancements section of the Google Search Console.

Title Tag: what it is and how to fill it in

The Tag Title is the title of our web page. It allows users to understand the theme of the page and to evaluate whether it is consistent with the research carried out. According to the W3C, it is a fundamental element of a web page.

It is still considered by search engines as one of the most relevant basic elements in terms of positioning and for this reason, it is essential for on-site SEO optimization.

From a technical point of view it has the following syntax:

< title >World Health< / title >

Title Tag practical example of compilation:

< title >Meta Tags Google: Tag Title e Meta Description SEO | side< / title >

It appears at the top of the browser and in the first line of the snippet present in the Google search results, as you can see in the example:

How to write an SEO Tag Title

An effective SEO Tag Title must have the following characteristics and best practices:

• filled in between 60 and 70 characters, for a maximum of 600 pixels;

• it must not be less than 30 characters, for a minimum of 200 pixels;

• it must be consistent with the content of the page;

• it must contain the main keywords for which we want to rank;

• must contain the name of the brand or site;

• it must be different and unique on each page;

• it must be written in an attractive way to increase the CTR.

Note that if your site appears on a search results page, the words in the title that matches the user's search query will be in bold. This can help users recognize if the page is relevant to their search.

Finally, Google can arbitrarily change the title tag to make it more relevant to the user's search query.

Meta Description: what it is and how to fill it in

The Meta Tag Description is a short description of the page content. It is shown in the SERP just below the title tag, as we can see in this example:

From a technical point of view it has the following syntax:

< meta name="description" content="content meta description" / >

Meta Description practical example of compilation:

<meta name = "description" content = "What are Meta Tags and which ones are useful for positioning on Google. Find out how to optimize Title Tag and Meta Description with this complete guide!" />

Unlike the Title Tag, the Meta Description is not considered by search engines as a ranking factor, but it has a great influence on the CTR and therefore it must be filled in with particular attention.

If Google deems that it is not descriptive enough to understand the content and intent of our page, the snippet proposed to users in SERP will be generated automatically.

This means that a meta description with unattractive content may be shown to users, who may prefer the results of the competition.

How to write an SEO Meta Tag Description

An optimized meta description has the following characteristics:

• filled in between 150 and 159 characters, for a maximum of 18 words;

• it must not be less than 70 characters, in order not to be not very descriptive;

• it must be consistent with the content of the page;

• it must contain the main keywords for which we want to rank;

• it must be different and unique on each page;

• it must be written in an attractive way to increase the CTR.

Also for the Meta Description, the words that match the user's search query will be highlighted in bold, thus making them more evident for the user.

Meta Keywords: the useless meta tag for positioning

Since 2009, the Meta Tag Keywords has not been used by Google for positioning purposes.

Practically Google ignores it and does not attribute any importance to it in terms of ranking as explained in the official video by Matt Cutts and specified in the official news of the Webmaster Central Blog of Google.

If you are among those who undertake to fill in the meta keywords, it is advisable that you start focusing your efforts on other aspects.
